Summer is officially here (finally). Love Island is back, the weathers getting warmer, and the nights are getting lighter. Though summer is full of wonderful things, makeup and heat aren’t exactly the best of friends.
Whether you’re prepping for a festival, summer getaway, or need to update your warm-weather routine, we’ve pulled together our top makeup tips for hot and humid weather. Keep reading for summer makeup hacks that will guarantee you’ll look glowy and golden all season long.
Start with the right lighting
It’s not secret – lighting is key to successful makeup application. This is especially important during the summer months when we’re spending more time outdoors and the days are generally brighter. By applying makeup in natural daylight, you can be rest assured that your makeup is on point with no surprises when you get outdoors.
If your current natural lighting isn’t up to par, apply your makeup in front of a dressing table mirror with lights (such as a Hollywood Mirror) with true daylight settings. Make-up lighting provides even diffusion and high colour accuracy; ideal for perfecting your beauty routine. Travelling? Opt for a Ring Light to use on the go. Always use sun protection
Your skin needs to be protected in the sun with SPF. Though it’s recommended to wear this all year round, pay special attention in summer with the UV index rising significantly during the warmer months . Wear a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen every single day, even under your makeup.
Alternatively, try using a sunscreen powder which can be reapplied throughout the day and be dusted on top of your makeup.
Set it!
Makeup really likes to move around when it’s hot so it’s important to start with a solid base. Start with an oil free moisturizer that’s less likely to leave your face greasy throughout the day. Next, use a primer, which will really help to hold makeup in place without feeling like a heavy additional layer.
For longer-lasting eyeshadow, avoid using an eye cream on your lids and smooth on an eye primer instead. Set the rest of your face with a light dusting of translucent powder to avoid heat induced cakey ’ness.
Always set your makeup with a setting spray to seal your look.
Less is more
After prepping your skin, if you’re looking to further prevent your makeup from creasing and caking, less is definitely more. Swap your foundation for a lightweight BB cream, or mix one pump of foundation with your moisturizer for a sheer finish. Only use concealer where you need it.
Rich deep colours may look quite heavy in summer so try out a sheer and natural shades. Skip the shimmer or anything too luminous – extra humidity can make you extra shiny if you have too much sparkle on your skin.
