Halo round backlit LED bathroom mirror fitted above a basin

Do I Need an Electrician to Fit an Illuminated Mirror?

Yes, if the mirror is wired into the mains. Any LED mirror or cabinet that connects to your home's electricity must be fitted by a qualified electrician. If you'd rather not involve an electrician, choose a battery-powered mirror. It needs no wiring and can be fitted by any competent DIYer.

Why does a wired mirror need an electrician?

A bathroom is one of the highest-risk rooms in the home for electrical work, because water and electricity are close together. A qualified electrician will make sure the connection is safe, that the mirror is in a suitable zone, and that the work meets the regulations. Bathroom electrical work may also need to meet Building Regulations, and your electrician will advise on this. Our guarantee on wired products requires installation by a qualified electrician.

What does the electrician need to know?

  • Where the mirror will go. All Pebble Grey mirrors and cabinets are IP44 rated, so they're suitable for Zone 2 and beyond. Mirrors and cabinets with a shaver socket must be fitted outside Zone 2.
  • The power supply. Our mirrors run on the standard UK 240V supply, and any transformer is built in or included, so nothing extra is needed. Full connection details are in the installation guide on each product page.
  • The sensor position. If the mirror has a touch or motion sensor, leave at least 150mm of clear space around it. Glass shower screens, chrome taps and other shiny surfaces nearby can switch the lights on by accident.

Can I test the mirror before it's fitted?

Yes. Before installation, the mirror can be connected to a standard 3A UK three-pin plug to check that the lights and sensor work. This is useful if the mirror will be fitted some time after it arrives.

What fixings will I need?

Every Pebble Grey mirror and cabinet comes with fixings for a solid wall. For plasterboard, use specialist plasterboard fixings rated for the weight of your mirror. The weight is shown on the product page.

What about battery-powered mirrors?

Battery mirrors are the easiest option if you don't have a power supply in the right place, or if you're renting. Some use AA batteries and others have a rechargeable lithium-ion battery charged by USB. They're IP44 rated, so they're safe in the bathroom, and they work just as well in a bedroom or hallway. See battery vs mains-powered mirrors for a full comparison.

Does the guarantee cover installation?

The guarantee covers manufacturing defects, not the cost of fitting. Labour for removing and refitting a product isn't covered, so keep your electrician's details in case you ever need a replacement.
